Ingredients You'll Need for this Recipe
- sweet potatoes: Sweet potatoes are the main ingredient in this recipe. They are rich in fiber, vitamins (such as vitamins A and C), and minerals. They provide natural sweetness and a soft texture to the fries. Sweet potatoes are tricky. They have a higher sugar content than russet potatoes which makes the “crisping” process a lot harder. I used 2 sweet potatoes for this recipe.
- onion powder. Onion powder is a dried form of fresh onions. It adds a savory and slightly sweet flavor to the sweet potato fries. It enhances the overall taste of the fries without overpowering the natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes.
- ground black pepper: Black pepper adds mild heat and a hint of spiciness to the sweet potato fries. It complements the sweetness of the potatoes and provides a pleasant contrast in flavors. Additionally, black pepper has antioxidant properties and can aid digestion. I prefer to use fresh black pepper for best results.
- salt. Salt is a necessary seasoning used to enhance the taste of every dish, we even use a pinch of salt to flavor the sweet baked goods. In this recipe, it brings out the natural flavors of the sweet potatoes and balances the overall taste. However, it's important to use salt in moderation to maintain a healthy balance.
- corn starch: Corn starch is a fine powder made from corn kernels. It serves as a coating for the sweet potato fries, helping to absorb excess moisture and create a crispy exterior when cooked in the air fryer. The cornstarch also adds a light and airy texture to the fries.
By using these simple and easily available ingredients, you can create a delicious and healthy alternative to traditional deep-fried sweet potato fries. The spices add depth of flavor, while the corn starch ensures satisfying crispiness.
Air frying reduces the amount of oil needed for cooking, making it a healthier option compared to deep frying. Sweet potatoes themselves are packed with nutrients, making this recipe a great choice for a nutritious snack or side dish.

Preparing Sweet Potato Fries for Freezing

How to Make Frozen Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
- Preheat fryer. Set air fryer to 370° for 5 minutes.
- Season Fries. In a bowl, toss fries in onion powder, black pepper, and salt.
- Spray basket. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray before laying out fries. (Remember not to over crowd the basket)
- Lay fries in basket. Once fries are in the basket, spray them with cooking spray.
- Air fry. Cook for 10 minutes at 370°. After 10 minutes, shake them and let them cook for another 5 minutes.
- Chop!
Why are my Frozen Sweet Potato Fries Soggy?
The biggest reason for soggy fries is that the fries are overcrowded in the basket. Air fryers use convection heat and constant air circulation. This process doesn't work well if there are too many in the basket.
Try adding fewer fries or shake the fries around every 5 minutes.
Do I need to defrost the fries before cooking them in the air fryer?
No, you can put them directly into the air fryer. That's the beauty of frozen sweet potato fries! It's a fuss-free, easy way to indulge in a healthy snack.
Can you Freeze Sweet Potato Fries?
Freezing sweet potatoes raw or cubed won't hold up well if they aren't blanched or partially cooked.
Can I Reheat Leftover Fries in the Air Fryer?
Absolutely! The air fryer is excellent for reheating, and it restores the crispiness that makes sweet potato fries irresistible.
If you have leftover sweet potato fries, store them in the fridge, and they'll be good for 2-3 days. Reheat them in the air fryer at 370 degrees F.
Preheat the pan for a couple of minutes, and make sure the the fries are in a single layer.
Are sweet potato fries healthier than regular fries?
Yes, they are. Sweet potatoes are rich in fiber and provide a good dose of vitamin A. When air-fried, they're a healthier alternative to deep-fried regular fries.
